Scottish Cot Death Trust welcomes the commitment from the Solicitor General Ruth Charteris KC to safer sleep for babies. The Trust has a long history of promoting and campaigning on issues of safe sleep and it is important that robust, evidence-based information is accessible to families across Scotland. We have a range of safe sleep resources available to families and those who work with them.
We are concerned by the figures relating to infant deaths shared today by the Solicitor General and it’s important for us to consider these figures in the context of other data for this period that will be published in the coming months. We will continue to evolve our education and awareness work to respond to the evidence and data available to us.
We support many families affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or young child. Today’s figures represent families and communities living with the deep impact of loss and it is important that we ensure those families are well supported.
Dr Mary Ray, Chair, Scottish Cot Death Trust commented ‘We are saddened by the figures presented in today’s statement as the death of any child is devastating, and our thoughts are with all those families who have been affected.’
We understand that today’s statement may be distressing, and our priority is to ensure bereaved families are cared for. If you or someone you know would like support we can be contacted on 0141 357 3946, or via email contact@scottishcotdeathtrust.org
