Martin’s Tough Mudder

Our National Education Coordinator, Martin turned his hand to fundraising by Completing the Tough Mudder – the day after the Charity of the Year Awards!

“Well, that was a tough 24 hours. Friday evening saw the culmination of our Charity of the Year adventure. It was great night and a pleasure to be involved as a staff member of such a great little charity, but also as a member of Scotland’s vibrant Third Sector community. However, having enjoyed the evening (shall we say), it was an early start on Saturday to organise things ahead of our early afternoon start at #toughmudder19.

For those who have never heard of Tough Mudder, it is an endurance event consisting of an 8-10mile course with around 25 obstacles, designed to test participant’s physical and mental strength – Electricity, ice water, fire, mud – Tough Mudder has the lot.

I’ve always fancied doing it and after a fair amount of procrastination, I (along with my wife, Tricia and our friends Kareema, Craig, and Stuart) booked up one Wednesday to conquer the Tough Mudder on the 15th of June – Two day later we found out that the Scottish Cot Death Trust was nominated for Scottish Charity of the Year at the SCVO Awards on Friday 14th June – Ouch.

But, we did it. 8 miles or thereabouts with 25 obstacles including the Artic Enema ice bath, the high Mudderhorn nets, and the electrified mud crawl! All in aid of SCDT – We have raised nearly double our target of £500. We hope to make it to four figures by the end of this week.

I was very proud to complete such a big personal challenge wearing a Scottish Cot Death Trust vest. As well as fundraising, raising awareness is really important so it was great for our wee charity to have a presence alongside so many other great causes.

What I did notice along the trail was that there was a lot of forget-me-nots and daisies – two flowers that have significance with our charity and our community, so if there was ever any need for motivation there were little reminders dotted along the way”.
