You Are Not Alone
It happened to us
Parents often report feeling very isolated and that they are the only one whose child has died suddenly and unexpectedly. They are unlikely to have relatives or friends to whom this has happened. Often other people saying “I understand” when they have never experienced this themselves can be hard to hear. You might find it helpful to read about other parents’ experiences and realise that you aren’t alone. Sadly, there are many families who have experienced a similar loss to your own. Some of those parents have agreed to share their personal experiences.
If you would like to share your personal experience please contact us.

Abbie – 10 weeks: A Sibling Story
When I was year old, my baby sister Abbie passed away at ten weeks old. I don’t have any memories of her unfortunately, and we have only a few pictures. When I look at the pictures I think about how alike we look, the older I got the harder I felt it was for me to deal with my sister’s death…
Barry – Surviving after our Baby’s Cot Death
It is now 27 years since the day our son, Barry, died in January 1986. On that dreadful day and months afterwards there was barely a minute that the events of that day did not circle round my mind. Someone said to me, that there would come a time when it would happen hourly…
Robbie – 8 weeks: Robbie’s Story
I had my first child when I was 17 years old; he was a shock to the system. I didn’t know I was pregnant until I delivered a baby boy 2-3 months premature born on the 25th of November 2006 at 11:30AM and weighed only 3lb 6oz. He was born at home in the bathroom and I delivered him myself…
Grant – 3 weeks

Andrew – 7 weeks
We always dreamed of 4 children and, despite being 9 weeks early, when Drew was born on 18th Feb 2011 our family was complete. Our older children (Libby, 8, Callum, 7, and Duncan, 4) were delighted with their new brother. For 4 weeks I travelled to our “local” hospital daily (2½ hour round trip) with my husband, Graham, and kids going as often as possible….
Musa – 2 days

Jay – 12 weeks
Jay Stewart Cooper was born on 29th November – two months early. He lived 12 weeks and 5 days. I was so scared of him being born so soon, I didn’t even ask if he was a boy or girl. Four minutes after he was born I asked what he was. He had been put on my chest and the midwife laughed as she’d forgotten to check as well….
Abbie – 10 weeks
Abbie was born on the 4th September 1999 at Forth Park Maternity Hospital in Kirkcaldy. She had to be induced as her mum was 10 days overdue. “I think that she was happy where she was”, said dad James. Abbie was our second child, our first being Kayleigh, who was 14 months when Abbie passed away….

Declan – 2 yrs 9 months
On the 4th of April, 2005 Declan was born in Hanover, Germany. He was the most gorgeous boy right from the start and he made us smile every day. Because my sister died of cot death on the 14th of January, 1986, I was very careful with Declan. I made sure that he was sleeping ….
Keoni – 11 months
We have been devastated by the loss of our perfect little boy Keoni aged just 11 months in September 2007. He was perfect in every way, big blue eyes, blonde spiked hair and the biggest smile you could imagine…..
Mitchell – 8 weeks
Mitchell John Stuart was born on 6th November 2008, a whole week late. It was all a bit dramatic as my labour was really slow until the last minute when Dave had to catch him as he was coming out! He was the most beautiful baby with a full head of thick, dark hair….
Robyn – 3.5 weeks
Robyn was born 11/12/07. We had an almost 3yr old son and we were convinced baby number 2 was going to be another boy, so we were shocked and delighted to discover it was a wee girl. I had always wanted more children but said that we were so lucky to have 2 perfect children ….
