Education in 2019 so far…

As we approach the Easter holidays, it’s a good time to provide an update – and take a breath! – on the ongoing work of the Education team at the charity. It has been an exciting time as we got to launch SafeSleepScotland.org, our new education project alongside our new charity website (if you are reading this then hopefully you have noticed!)

We were also very excited to publicly release our new awareness video “ A Baby’s Guide to Safe Sleep.”  The video is a poem narrated from a baby’s point of view explaining how we can keep baby safe when they are asleep.  Please click here if you haven’t seen it yet.

In terms of Safe Sleep/Reduce the Risks education sessions this year, we have had about 35 sessions – that’s over 600 participants across childcare and healthcare, across Scotland.  We have been to Inverness, Perth, Edinburgh, and Dumfries so far in 2019, with trips to Ayrshire, the Borders, and Clackmannanshire booked in before summer.

The quick breakdown of 2019 so far…

22 Childcare settings across Scotland, from Dingwall to Lockerbie.

7 sessions across 3 Colleges, Edinburgh College, City of Glasgow College, and Inverness College (part of UHI) – NC & HNC Childhood Practice students, most currently on placement in the childcare sector.

3rd year Midwifery students at Edinburgh Napier University, and Post-Graduate Health Visiting students at Glasgow Caledonian University – These students are on placement and many will go on to work in the NHS

30+ childminders – Hopefully the beginning of some ongoing work with the Scottish Childminding Association

Training providers – Tigers Ltd, Experiential Play, and Training for Care – Ongoing sessions with trainees working towards apprenticeships and SVQ qualifications in childcare.

We have also had meetings with Police Scotland and the College Development Network this year, as well as attending The Gathering SCVO conference. We also attended the Bonnie Bairn fair in Edinburgh under our Safe Sleep Scotland brand.

We have also been in the news – Early Years Scotland’s Parent Chat magazine covered the launch of our awareness video, and posted another article on their Blog – you can read that article here –  as did Charity Today you can read that article here

Between now and summer will be no less busy. We have several sessions booked in at Colleges in Ayrshire and the Borders, our work with nurseries continues, and we will be looking to provide some Reduce the Risks and Next Infant Support education within the NHS boards. We are also looking to expand our work with childcare training providers by offering Train the Trainer sessions.

A big thank you must go to our volunteer Liz, who largely works with the nurseries, sometimes delivering two sessions a week on top of her other commitments – this is a huge and ongoing help to the Trust. We are also delighted to be joined by Allyson who will also be volunteering in the education team – her experience in healthcare will be so valuable to us.
